| What was your first job?
I started babysitting when I was 13. Does that count? I feel like every teenage girl babysat at one point or another. After that I did catalog and fashion modeling from 14 to about 17. I was even in 17 Magazine and YM. I think those are both long gone publications tho...
How and when did you get into the adult industry?
I went with a friend of mine to a job interview when I was about 18. It was to work at a dungeon in San Francisco and although she decided not to do it I jumped in full steam! I worked as a professional dominatrix for several years and also got introduced to . In fact, I was the first Kink model to get tied up and penetrated on film at the same time. Seems very common place now, but back in 2001 it was still considered a no no.
How do your friends and family feel about your decision to be an adult model?
When I started my pro domina job, my friends kind of laughed and rolled their eyes. I grew up in San Francisco, so stuff like that was not completely out of the ordinary. By the time I started shooting, most of my friends were attached to the adult industry so of course no one cared. My family is still (for the most part) blissfully ignorant. My siblings know, but just don't ask about it.
Is there anybody special in your life? Or are you looking for somebody at the moment? If so, what do you look for?
I've been with the same person for a while now. I'm really lucky he's so open and understanding about what I do. All I get from him is support.
If you had not joined the adult industry, what do you think you would be doing now?
I'd be a makeup artist. There are several times I've run off and tried to do something different, but I keep coming back to the adult industry! For a while I worked in the music industry and got to tour all over the country with some very well known bands.
Do you get recognized in real life? Any funny stories?
A few times. Every once in a while I'll get recognized at the airport. Sometimes people will tweet me and say they saw me at the nail salon, out at a bar or shopping someplace, but they were too nervous to say hi. I just hope I don't look like a mess or am wearing gym clothes when they see me!
Do you prefer video or photo shoots?
I like both. In photos you get to pose more and make sure everything looks perfect. You're creating an amazing image to be frozen in time. In video you get to have more fun and fuck pretty girls tho!
Where is the most exotic location you have shot at?
Hmm. I loved shooting in the English country side, but of course shooting on the beach in Jamaica was pretty awesome too. They were very different, but both very cool.
What are your favorite and least favorite parts of your body?
I like my legs from mid thigh down, my tits and my eyes. I'm constantly doing battle with my butt and thighs and trying to create definition in my arms.
Who is your favorite adult star (past or present)?
Right now I have a total girl crush on Veronica Ricci! I guess I just have a thing for red heads and she's so damn pretty! Candle Boxxx is pretty fantastic too, so vibrant, friendly, beautiful and sooooo naughty! Annie Sprinkle is also inspiring - she's smart, funny and has been around forever! Maybe there's a soft spot in my heart for her too because she's a San Francisco chick and one of the first people I knew of who was an advocate (who has an education!) for sex workers and sex worker rights.
What is your favorite sex toy?
Hitachi magic wand!! There's always one in my suitcase and one next to my bed!
Do you exercise on a regular basis? What kind?
I try to. It depends if I'm home or not. When I'm home I workout at least three times a week doing cardio and some strength training. For a while I tried P90X, but it's hard to commit to when you're not home a lot. When traveling and shooting every day I feel like a get a work out just rolling around on video!
Where did you go on your last vacation (not work related)?
Vacation? What's that? Does visiting family for the holidays count? Lol. I think the last place I went where I didn't work at all was my family's beach house on the outer banks of North Carolina. It's totally isolated and right on the beach. Just gorgeous!
Do you have any pets?
Kitties! Two of them. I feel like a total dork because my phone is full of pictures of my cats!
What is the last book you read?
Stardust by Neil Gaiman. Currently I'm reading The complete works of Sherlock Holmes
Do you have a guilty pleasure TV show? Song?
I love "So You Think You Can Dance". It's totally my guilty pleasure tv show. True Blood is another one. The story keeps getting more and more lame, but I can't stop watching!
What is your dream car?
I'm gonna lose points for this, but I'm not really a car person. I didn't even have a drivers license until I was 26. I love vintage cars and would totally like to have a 1950's Plymouth or Lincoln with suicide doors.
What is your favorite alcoholic beverage?
My drink or choice is usually vodka tonic or bloody mary. When I lived in New Orleans I learned how to make an awesome bloody mary!
What are your favorite brands of jeans? Shoes?
7 Jeans or Guess. Shoes in general I love and have a pretty big collection! Right now I'm really liking Badgely Mischka and of course Christian Louboutin
Do you have a hobby that would surprise most people?
I don't know. I live at the beach and do a lot of snorkeling. During the spring and summer you can find me in the water almost every day I'm home. Is that surprising? Maybe because I'm so glow in the dark, lol.
Do you have any special talents?
When I was 19 I ran off and joined the circus...no, really! I learned how to use a bullwhip and hit targets with it, dance on broken glass and swallow swords. I don't do this anymore, but every so often I'll use one as a party trick! When I was learning how to swallow swords I'd carry a drum stick or knitting needle around with me and pull it out in bars after I'd been drinking. It's a little disturbing to see some chick randomly swallowing a long stick at a bar!
What's your ordinary day like? A day in the life of Kendra James...
God, you'd be bored! If I'm home then I'm working online, answering emails, booking shoots, updating my website and just generally doing admin work. If I'm traveling then I'm on a plane, in a car, on a train trying to get to a job. The funnest part of my day is shooting and playing with sexy girls or coming up with new scenarios for my site. Living at the beach breaks up my day a little bit since I can stop working for a while and get in the water. At night I usually meet friends for happy hour and dinner.
