| What was your first job?
Waffle House waitress. I don’t mean to brag, but I’m a certified Waffle House Hashbrown server.
How and when did you get into the adult industry?
I started doing softcore non-nude bondage fetish videos when I was 22. I had just finished grad school and got a great job as assistant director of a library and head of reference services. I loved my work and I knew that I would probably do this job or one like it for the rest of my life. Shooting the bondage videos were an escape from the ennui I was experiencing at the idea of “the rest of my life” starting at age 22. I also earned more in an hour on set than I did in a whole day at the library. A few months later I fell in love with someone who lived in LA and decided to move and continue shooting fetish content. That quickly led to lesbian porn. I’ve never enjoyed a job as much as I love this one.
How did you come up with your stage name?
Ela: I truncated the name Zelda, inspired by Zelda Fitzgerald.
Darling: Wendy Darling and Jessica Darling, two female literary characters I love.
How do your friends and family feel about your decision to be an adult model?
For the most part my friends have been supportive, but nobody has my back as much as my family does. My parents are supportive, wonderful people.
What does it take to make it in a tough industry like the adult business? What important lessons have you learned so far?
I think you need a thick skin, good money management skills, and a real desire to have sex on camera. It’s great to be a good and attractive model, but porn isn’t just about looking good in a picture, it’s about fucking.
Is there anybody special in your life? Or are you looking for somebody at the moment? If so, what do you look for?
Everyone in my life is very special to me, however I’m not looking for a romantic partner.
If you had not joined the adult industry, what do you think you would be doing now?
I would be a librarian, hopefully one serving Young Adults.
Do you get recognized in real life? Any funny stories?
I tend to get recognized most at nerd conventions because people recognize my tattoos, which are mostly pretty nerdy. I don’t strike people as someone who would be in porn, so there have been times when someone will sheepishly confess to me: “you look this porn star named Ela Darling. I hope that doesn’t offend you!” Sometimes someone will walk past me and seemingly not acknowledge me at all, except to pause near me and quickly say “I love your work, Ela” before continuing on. I think some people feel that it’s taboo to publicly admit to watching porn and therefore being able to recognize a porn star on sight. In NYC a pizza owner was very enthusiastic about taking photos with me and gave my friend and I a bunch of free food. He kept saying how jealous his friends would be, but I wasn’t sure if it was because he knew I did porn or if he just had a thing for blondes?
Do you prefer video or photo shoots?
Video shoots, hands down. Shooting video almost always means getting to come. Shooting photos means looking pretty in the throes of bliss, but looking like you’re having an orgasm is pretty far removed from having an actual orgasm.
Where is the most exotic location you have shot at?
Is Australia exotic? I hesitate to take work out of the country because a lot of the offers I’ve gotten wound up being veiled solicitations for prostitution and I personally don’t escort.

One day, all consumer goods will be nothing but dust.
Do you have a hobby that would surprise most people?
I read a LOT.
What is something about you that not too many people know?
I finished my Master’s degree in Library and Information Science when I was 21. To celebrate, I got the Dewey decimal number for Harry Potter tattooed on my back.
Do you have any special talents?
I used to be in a circus sideshow and amongst other things, I can smash a lightbulb on my forehead and eat the broken glass.
What's your ordinary day like? A day in the life of Ela Darling...
I’m kind of a boring shut in. I wake up, walk my dog, read, write or work on whatever projects I’ve got in the works, respond to pressing emails, exercise, cook, spend an embarrassing amount of time on Reddit, and avoid travelling further than my neighborhood as much as possible.
